Earlier this year I purchased a 1998 755 4wd FEL 600 hours, rear mower and tiller, for $9500. I think that was a little cheap. I think your 855 price is in the ballpark. Not a steal but a fair price.

I'm going to an auction in a few days that has a JD755 4wd with 70 FEL that I'm interested in. I have the exact same thing in a 1998 in excellent shape. The one at the auction is an older model and it is in about as rough shape as could be. I tried to start it but the battery was almost dead and would not turn it. I will be interested to see if they jump it and get it running or auction it as is. This tractor looks like it sat out every day for the last 15 years. Well it looks like it sat out for 50 years, but it's only 15 years old. The fenders are very rusty. Seat is junk. Missing side engine panels and front grill screen. Almost every knob is missing. Dash membrane over idiot lights is mutilated, none of the idiot lights work. It probably has not had good maintenance of fluids. It is really rough, and any prospective bidder will have to see it as a project. I'd enjoy the project at the right price. I know what one would be worth in good shape, but I need to come up with a limit for my bidding. If the engine is totally shot, how much is a new or rebuilt engine in round numbers? If the hydro is shot, how much? It's not likely that both would be dead, but maybe one or the other. I am assuming $2000 will about take care of either end.
Those are the two things that scare me the most, if I cannot run it before bidding. If it is not running, I am going to assume it needs an engine and bid accordingly. Any hard info appreciated.

Someone emailed me privately that maybe the early years had a "fabricated" front end. Which doesn't sound good. I'll be sure to pay attention when it comes in to the dealer.

I have seen a name brand diesel oil that is synthetic or semi-synthetic, at 5W40. I am wondering if I could run it year round in my JD, here in Illinois. Operations would be in ambient temps of slightly above zero F up to maybe 100F. Can I combine the 5W30 and 15W40 temperature charts shown in my manual to arrive at the range for a 5W40?

Gator, I just re-read your older posts and see that you are in New Jersey. In that case I really agree with your dealer, that a blower is much more of a luxury than a necessity. Most years you will not have a snowfall that exceeds the ability of a rear blade on a small compact tractor. It is the same in Illinois where I live. My Deere dealer explained it to me, that when we have a year like last one, when we get a couple of big snows, everybody wants a blower. But they are very unusual snowfalls for Illinois or NJ. He said save your money and get what you need for 95% of your snowfalls, don't buy for the once every few years thing. In that case you just might have to get out a couple of times during the storm. While you are out there shivering you can warm yourself with the thoughts of all the money you did not spend.

I do not know a lot about the price but it sounds very fair. As to the cutter, it is the right size for the 4100. It is the size that JD recommends.

No, I think it is something else. I know what you are describing, but some of the tines are straight down and they are not 6" below the shoe. I have checked out several models and they are all the same. I am still thinking the unit has to be tipped forward, maybe?

There have been some real good replies in this thread. To the original poster, I will repeat a couple of the points for emphasis. :-)
Do not get bogged down on "specs". You are probably an analytical person, as I tend to be too. As people have mentioned, rather than specs, check out how the tractor fits you, how the controls fall to hand and foot, how easy it is to attach/detach the loader, etc. These day to day things will be with you always, long after specs and price for that matter are forgotten. For instance, I sat on a 21D with FEL at the dealer. I did not like where the loader control stick is located. My JD 755 has it right next to the seat, which I prefer. You may feel the opposite, but check out those things, not specs.

I have a 755 hydro, which is functionally similar to the 4100 hyrdro in terms of pulling implements. Same HP and close in size. I have a 5 foot blade and it handles it easily. That is considered the right size, but some guys use a 6 foot blade successfully, especially on lighter materials.

When I load the Jplan homepage, Internet Explorer 5 tells me I need to download a plug in to properly view the page. The suggested download is "uniscribe". I have not done it and the page seems to work anyway. Never heard of uniscribe. What gives?-Don M

You have to bleed it. I don't know the specifics of your system. It may involve loosening the lines at the injectors. I think that is a typical way.

On the general tractors forum at ytmag.com, there are tons of posts in the archives about tire ballasting. In Michigan there are farm co-ops that use a beet juice! It doesn't freeze, is heavy, and safe. A lot of guys use windshield washer fluid, which is methanol. Although it is toxic to injest, apparently animals are not attracted to it and it is not much of a threat to the ground through leakage. Regular antifreeze is attractive and toxic to animals.
